Machair is a Gaelic word meaning fertile low lying grassy plain. It is the name given to one of the rarest habitats in Europe which only occurs on the exposed Western coasts of Scotland and Ireland. Here sand, largely made up of crushed shells, is regularly blown ashore by Atlantic gales. Over time the calcium-rich shell sand and traditional Outer Hebrides crofting land practices have led to the development of fertile Scottish grassland habitats renowned for their wildflowers, birds and insect life.

I spend much of my time trying to photograph wild places. But such places can be found even in Greater London. On a rare few winter mornings a year, the weather conditions provide that elusive combination of frost and mist which turns Richmond Park into something magical. This was one such morning when the light was perfect for a few fleeting seconds.
